Miller continues its international expansion with new hires and a new platform in Bermuda. This signals a major development and continuing commitment to Miller’s growth ambitions. Find out more about our presence in Bermuda and what this will bring to our clients in this short Q&A.

1. What are the key focus areas for Miller’s expansion in Bermuda?

Our main focus area is reinsurance, both treaty and facultative. We also plan to expand our wholesale placement options for our North American and international broker partners to access the Bermuda marketplace.

2. Can you tell us about the Bermuda team and the expertise they can bring?

Charlie Simpson has recently joined Miller to lead our new platform in Bermuda. He will concentrate on growing the broker’s presence in the key (re)insurance hub by launching a high-quality independent offering, initially focused on reinsurance and insurance-linked securities. Charlie has over 40 years’ experience in the sector and joins from a large broker where he was most recently Executive Vice President of Non-Marine.

Erik Manning, will join Miller as Head of Insurance-Linked Securities (ILS) in Q3 2021. He has over 20 years’ experience in the sector and joins from Peak Capital where he was CEO. Prior to that, he was Managing Director at Aon Bermuda and has also held senior roles at Markel Re and Guy Carpenter. Erik holds a Ph.D. from the University of London.

Robert Alexander, Head of Reinsurance (based in London) - is a leading reinsurance broking figure in the fast growing Industry Loss Warranty and Insurance Linked Securities markets, and a member of Miller’s Executive Committee. He has over 30 years’ experience.

Sebastian Alexander, Reinsurance Broker - who relocates to Bermuda from Miller’s London office. Sebastian has extensive market and client relationships and has experience in the ILS arena, placing Industry Loss Warranties (ILW) and also in the traditional markets in London, Europe and North America.

Francesca Cacace will provide support to Miller’s Bermuda team, bringing her diverse experience and local Bermudian knowledge.

Going forward, our London-based reinsurance team will work seamlessly with the Bermuda team as one business.

3. What will the new office in Bermuda bring to clients?

Specialist expertise for our clients and markets, whether based in Bermuda or otherwise.

4. What makes Bermuda a desirable location for business?

Bermuda is a growing (re)insurance marketplace and a key hub internationally. For decades, Miller has placed business with Bermudian based (re)insurers, but having that expertise now on the ground will make our brokerage proposition much more valuable and responsive to our clients’ needs.

5. How will the Bermuda office aid Miller’s continued expansion?

As a global specialty broker, we need the best access to markets for our client’s risk transfer needs; establishing a permanent presence in Bermuda was a missing piece of the puzzle. As risks become larger and more complex, access to the capacity and intellectual firepower within the Bermuda market will greatly benefit our current and future clients.

6. What benefits will our presence in Bermuda bring to the North American territory?

We already utilise the Bermudian market for our clients and the physical presence of the team will add greatly in terms of relationships and market knowledge. An independent “finger on the pulse” for our clients.

7. What does the future hold for our Bermuda office (long term)?

Miller has an ambitious growth plan and Bermuda will play a central role in that growth. We look forward to working with our clients, markets and other stakeholders in offering a compelling service offering in a time of reduced broker choice.

Charlie Simpson, Head of Bermuda says: “I am delighted to join Miller given its excellent reputation and collaborative culture. The opportunity to develop Miller’s strategy in Bermuda is a unique and exciting challenge and I look forward to reconnecting with my contacts on the island and fostering new relationships as we expand our platform”.

Erik Manning added, “With the insurance and reinsurance markets currently experiencing a period of disruption, Miller is uniquely positioned to harness the opportunities presented by these changes and grow its business significantly over the coming years. I am honoured to join the firm at such an exciting time and look forward to working with the team across London and Bermuda to deliver the quality offering for which Miller is so well known.”
