An opportunity has arisen in the Analytics team for a Catastrophe Analyst to join.

This position will be responsible for performing risk analysis to support Miller in winning, placing and monitoring complex insurance and reinsurance risks in the Lloyd’s, London and International markets, through the application of catastrophe modelling and other analytical techniques.

The role will involve:

  • Running natural catastrophe models centrally for various business streams, analysing catastrophe exposures to support Miller’s wider analytics offering to its clients
  • Carrying out investigations of the appropriateness and sensitivity of modelling assumptions, maintaining Miller’s commercial position where this does not conflict with relevant professional standards
  • Introducing new catastrophe modelling techniques where applicable
  • Maintaining robust documentation, data cleansing, data manipulation and peer review practices to ensure accuracy and relevance of model outputs and assumptions, clearly explaining any limitations of outputs
  • Communicating modelling process and results with internal and external stakeholders, both verbally and through formal reports/presentations, to a very high standard
  • Building trusting relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Promoting the individual and the wider Analytics team, and identify new areas around the business where the Analytics team can add value
  • Ensuring high standards of accuracy in work, ensuring all work is appropriately peer-reviewed and manage competing priorities to deliver work in a timely fashion

The candidate



  •  Bachelor’s degree in numerate and/or natural hazards discipline


  •  Master’s degree in numerate and/or natural hazards discipline



  •  Strong grasp of catastrophe modelling methodologies and applications within the (re)insurance industry


  • Understanding of application of modelling to specific lines of business and risk transfer methods for (re)insurance within the Lloyd’s and other markets (e.g. Binders, ILWs, Facultative Reinsurance)



  • Experience using RMS including proficient use of SQL
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for a variety of audiences
  • Preparing raw data for import into an RMS EDM


  • Recent experience using AIR
  • GIS experience, ideally ESRI products
  • Experience in a broker and additional experience from non-broking e.g. model vendor or syndicate
  • Experience in implementing and improving modelling processesExperience making assumptions when faced with missing or unreliable data
