Directors’ and Officers’ Liability

The insurance market persists in a soft cycle. Rate reductions are still broadly available and there is an abundance of capacity available. We are beginning to see individual insurers resisting significant discounts. Against the backdrop of a challenging claims environment, we expect this resistance to increase slightly in 2026.

Coverage

Market offerings continue to expand, exemplified by the introduction of new D&O wording earlier in the year. This product provides comprehensive protection, ensuring policyholders are adequately prepared for future uncertainties. Securing broad coverage now is recommended, as future conditions may restrict opportunities for enhanced coverage.

Rating

While typical rate reductions range from 5% to 10%, some accounts deemed overpriced have seen discounts as high as 40%, although these cases are exceptional. The primary drivers of rate decreases are heightened competition and strategies to mitigate insolvency risks.

Appetite

Insurers in the D&O market are exhibiting significant appetite, targeting previously overlooked sectors to achieve growth. There is increased focus on assessing the financial resilience of insureds, reflecting concerns about insolvency risks.

Capacity

The D&O insurance market in 2025 experienced softening conditions and increased competition, with no entirely new insurers entering the market in the last 12 months. However, the MGA sector is growing rapidly, and we have seen several new companies enter the D&O space over the past 12 months, backed by one or more existing insurers. By prioritising premium volume over coverage breadth, these businesses have become a significant driver of falling premium rates.
