Following on from his recent ranking as one of the ‘rising stars’ in the London D&O insurance market, we caught up with Adam Taylor to learn more about his reaction to his ranking success, how he approaches his role and how Miller has supported him.

Congratulations on being ranked number four on the Insurance Insider’s ‘Rising stars’ list for brokers operating in the London D&O insurance market! What were your first thoughts when you saw the ranking?

Adam: To be honest, I was shocked and grateful. It was so great to see the team being recognised as the number one D&O broker in the London market. I was incredibly proud of that feat, so to then find out that I was ranked as a rising star as well was a real shock. It’s always nice to be recognised for the work you do, so I’m hugely thankful to the people who voted for me. However, I do think my ranking is testament to the support of the great team I have around me, that enables me to do my job well.

What’s the key driver behind how you approach your work?

Adam: My key driver is always to get the best for the client. In such a hard marketplace, the clients rely on us now more than ever to get the best result and it’s crucial that we make sure that’s exactly what we deliver. Once you can ensure that you’re delivering this service, it’s incredibly rewarding to strengthen relationships with clients. However, that only comes when you’ve earnt their trust. It’s therefore crucial that we’re always working with complete integrity and with the client’s best interests at heart.

What are some of the ways you support clients?

Adam: Supporting clients is not just about finding them the best terms. It’s making sure we’re communicating regularly with them so they’re informed in every step of the process. I therefore make sure that I’m providing updates to the client on the progress of their submission and that I’m on hand to discuss any questions they may have. We also ensure we catch up with our clients regularly throughout the year to discuss market trends and updates – it always helps to have a client that understands the market conditions.

We also spend time really getting to know our clients and ensuring their insurance programmes are tailored to their individual risk appetite. This can quite often mean coming up with new and innovative ways of structuring programmes and/or cover, making sure the client is getting the most suitable cover for their money.

What led you into your current career field?

Adam: To be honest, I sort of landed in it. It all started when I got a summer internship in Washington with the CIAB. It was a great opportunity to get exposure in the industry, meet incredible people and I loved it from the offset. From there my career led me to work in the insurance industry in Sydney for a year, after which I ended up at Miller in the FI and D&O team. It has been great to get exposure to different insurance markets around the world - a skill that has hugely helped me in my role at Miller.

How has Miller supported you during your time with us?

Adam: Miller has been incredibly supportive throughout my years here. Miller’s management style is great at ensuring I’m constantly developing and pushing myself, whilst at the same time giving me more responsibility, which as a young broker starting out has been exactly what I’ve wanted.

They’ve helped me through my CII qualifications, providing extra training where needed and have helped me develop incredible relationships across the market.

Thanks for sharing Adam – and well done again on being ranked number four on the Insurance Insider’s ‘Rising stars’ list for brokers operating in the London D&O insurance market!
