Lloyd’s Broker Academy is designed for individuals with at least three years of insurance industry experience who are seen as the ‘leaders of tomorrow’. Each participant spends three out of the five weekdays in London focusing on a core curriculum subject – normally the field they are already engaged in. The week provides a really comprehensive foundation for understanding and working with Lloyd’s and London wholesale brokers.

Miller was once again proud to be heavily involved in the annual Lloyd’s North American Broker Academy in London.

Having been postponed in 2021, due to Covid, this year was all the more impactful for the 34 delegates.

Hand selected by their respective US and Canadian intermediary firms, the delegates embraced this unique learning experience. Ranging from retail to wholesale and MGAs (each of them typically had 5 to 10 years industry experience) from the outset their mindset was to engage and absorb as much knowledge as possible. The participants simultaneously networked and supported each other during an intensive week.

Monday morning was a high-level kick off led firstly by John Neal, Lloyd’s CEO followed by a CEO roundtable facilitated by Lloyd’s Chairman, Bruce Carnegie-Brown.

The rest of the week followed at a similarly high level taking, in subjects such as:

  • Black Swan events
  • Innovation and the Lloyd’s Lab
  • What makes a perfect submission?
  • Claims Lifecycle
  • Shadow Underwriting and Broking

The Team Challenge is the culminating event in which they must present to demonstrate the knowledge and insight gained.

There are also social functions to enable networking. Miller hosted a darts night which is always great fun. Lloyd’s Chief of Markets Patrick Tiernan hosted dinner in the prestigious Adam Room at Lloyd’s.

During the course of the week, there were 120 market practitioners that presented or hosted the cohort. The event is organised by a group of practitioners from across the market in conjunction with Lloyd’s. John Eltham of Miller being co-chair this year, alongside Dawnmarie Black of Lloyd’s North America.

Talent development is high on the agenda for many clients and the Academy makes a valuable contribution. Having been running in one guise or another for nearly 30 years its impact is far reaching. Some of the prior participants being in senior positions and now sponsoring rising talent of their own. The Academy itself has also progressed with a feeder level Boot Camp going from strength to strength and an Alumni initiative to be launched.

John Eltham commenting on the success of this year’s event observed: “The Academy is demanding, enjoyable and challenging. It can also be very rewarding with past participants identifying it as a positive turning point in their careers. Based on the commitment and enthusiasm of this year’s cohort the future looks bright for our industry.”
