A day in the life of a technician
Name: Jurgita Barton
Job title: Broker Back-Up Technician
Specialist area: Reinsurance
Joined Miller: November 2001
What qualifications/work experience did you have when you joined Miller?
I obtained my degree in Economics and Finance in Lithuania, which is where I am from. I came to England for the summer after completing my degree to gain some work experience and to travel. During that time I met my husband and I never went back to Lithuania.
I worked for another insurance broker as an Administration Assistant for one year before I joined Miller.
Which team do you work in?
I work in the Reinsurance business unit. I recently moved to the London team, having worked with the international team for three and a half years.
What aspects of your role do you most enjoy?
I like the professionalism of the team I work in and of the company in general. It is a friendly place to work. I also like the fact that you are always encouraged to learn, study and progress.
What do you least enjoy?
The renewal period. It is our busiest time of the year and it means long hours. Thankfully it is only like that for a few months!
What is a typical working day for you?
The first thing I do in the morning is to check my emails for new or outstanding queries. We have team meetings twice a week to discuss priorities; issues; new opportunities; cross selling; and market news. During our busy period we hold these meetings daily.
The first thing I do in the morning is to check my emails for new or outstanding queries. All of our clients are based in London which means that there is no time difference and information can be exchanged, questions answered and issues solved more quickly and efficiently than with overseas clients, where time difference can cause delays.
Most of my day is taken up preparing slips, broking information and statistics for the brokers to take out to the market or to be sent to the overseas reinsurers. I also prepare endorsements, which are amendments to (re)insurance contracts. When our team participates in tenders, I work with the account executives and help to prepare the presentations and brochures. I also work with actuaries when we conduct comparative modelling analysis of treaty reinsurance programmes for our clients.
Why did you choose to work for Miller?
I had heard of Miller and its reputation as a good company to work for. Miller has a working environment that rewards commitment and performance.
There were many factors that attracted me to Miller, in particular the excellent benefits, for example the investment made in employees professional development and especially pension scheme.
How would you describe the Miller culture?
The culture at Miller is service driven, continuously trying to improve and exceed expectations.
Are you studying for any professional qualifications?
I have passed the Lloyd's Introductory Test, completed the Miller Technical Development Programme and have sat the final two exams for the Chartered Insurance Institute's 'Advanced Diploma in Insurance' in autumn 2005.
